Soma Smith grew up in the small mountain town of Durango, Colorado, where she discovered her love for climbing at a young age.
Soma joined the local climbing team at age 15, and began to compete with USA Climbing. Her junior year of high school, she had the opportunity to pour more of her time and focus into the sport through World Class Academy. This incredible opportunity led her to a love of travel and outdoor climbing–so much so that, when she returned home, she quit climbing competitively to focus solely on travel and projects at some of the best crags around the States, including Rifle, Maple Canyon and The Red.
The lush, green forests of the PNW drew Soma to Bellingham, WA, where she began work on a Bachelors in psychology. Squamish became her new climbing hub for the summers, but during the fall and winter months Soma learned to embrace the rain and eventually found her way to whitewater kayaking.
Soma has since followed her new passion for rivers to White Salmon, where she resides with her partner and a cuddly dog Koosah. Her love and devotion to climbing remain unwavering, and she’s stoked to find a new climbing community in the Gorge!
